(Oct. 13) - Junior Tina Bellocchio notched her sixth shutout of the 2007 season, and sophomore Tina Chechel scored the game winning goal as the College of Staten Island clinched its third straight Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Championship with a 2-0 win over CCNY on Saturday. With the win, the Dolphins improve to 8-6 overall, 4-0 in HVWAC play, and increased their HVWAC regular season winning streak to 14 games.
At 10:16 minutes into the game, CSI’s Kelly Kenny thrust a sharp pass to Tina Chechel who drove it from the left side right past CCNY’s goalie Angelika Slabiak to score the first goal of the game. Taking the same route as Chechel, Jennifer Nuniziata took a quick shot from the left side off a short pass from Fiosa Begai to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead just 13 minutes later.
With 17 minutes left in the game CSI’s head coach, John Guagliardo was red carded and ejected from the game but that didn’t phase the Dolphins' focus as they finished the game, 2-0.
CSI goaltender Tina Bellocchio took no pity on the Beavers and kept them to no score while saving five shots.
Despite allowing two goals to pass, CCNY’s goaltender Slabiak saved 13 CSI shots.
The Dolphins next home game will be Tuesday against William Paterson in a non-conference match. Game time is 3: 30pm.
After CSI’s last CUNYAC match against Medgar Evers on October 18th, they will meet again with CCNY in the CUNYAC Championship game on November 3rd at 11 a.m. at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. The Dolphins will also receive a bye for the first round of the HVWAC playoffs and host the winner of the #4/#5 game on Nov. 1 at the College of Staten Island.
