Hitter of the Week
Lauren Stein • Sarah Lawrence College
Sophomore • Third Baseman/Shortstop • Redmond, WA
Lauren Stein has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Softball Hitter of the Week. Stein batted .545 on the week while collecting six hits, five runs scored and four runs batted in. The sophomore infielder has performed consistently in every game displaying strong fundamentals which has contributed to her success at the plate and in the field.

Sophomore • Pitcher/Outfielder • Staten Island, NY (Moore Catholic)
Alyson Chiaramonte has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Softball Pitcher of the Week. Last week’s Player of the Week had another dominating week in the circle, earning two wins and compiling a 0.58 ERA striking out 20 while walking none. She also was productive at the plate, batting .615 with three RBI.

Alyson Chiaramonte • St. Joseph’s College
Sophomore • Pitcher/Outfielder • Staten Island, NY (Moore Catholic)
Alyson Chiaramonte has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Softball Player of the Week. The sophomore compiled an impressive 4-0 record in the circle, including two shutouts, with a 0.88 ERA striking out 37 batters and walking none in 24.0 innings of work. She was also productive at the plate, pacing the Lady Bears with a .583 batting average (14-for-24), driving in nine runs and scoring eight runs. Chiaramonte is currently on a 19 game hitting streak.
Rookie of the Week
Mabel Vargas • St. Joseph’s College
Freshman • Pitcher/Utility • Ridgewood, NY (Mary Louis Academy)
Mabel Vargas has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Rookie of the Week. The freshman utility player posted a .412 batting average (7-for-17) on the week, with five runs batted in and three runs scored. Vargas also made two appearances in the circle not allowing a run and striking out nine in 5.0 innings of work, earning her third win of the season.

Millicia Malvasio • St. Joseph’s College
Freshman • Shortstop • Brooklyn, NY (Bishop Kearney)
Millicia Malvasio has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Softball Player of the Week. The freshman shortstop led the Lady Bears to five wins on the week with a fantastic week at the plate. She compiled a .682 batting average, 1.045 slugging percentage, with six RBI and six runs scored, five doubles, and highlighted by her first career home run.

Sophomore • Pitcher/Third Baseman • Bayside, NY (Mary Louis Academy)
Lisa Scheer has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Softball Pitcher of the Week. Last season’s HVWAC Tournament MVP compiled a 2-1 record with 2.80 ERA and 23 strikeouts. Scheer threw her first career no-hitter in a conference victory over New Rochelle, where she struck out seven, with her only blemish a walk in the fifth inning. She was also productive at the plate hitting .400 with four RBI.

Freshman • Pitcher/Shortstop • Plano, TX (John Paul II)
Elizabeth Johnston has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Softball Rookie of the Week. Already a member of the HVWAC Volleyball and Basketball All-Conference teams, Johnston demonstrated her versatility compiling a .400 batting average in her first week of play. In the nightcap against St. Joseph’s, she nearly hit for the cycle with a 3-for-3 outing, with an RBI, double and a triple.

2009-10 Regular Season and Tournament Champions

St. Joseph’s College captures their first conference championship in four years remaining undefeated in regular season and tournament action. The road to the title wasn’t easy, with big opposition from Albany Pharmacy who posed tough tests for the Lady Bears in both the regular season meeting and in the championship game.
In the title game, St. Joseph’s led from the opening tip and by as many as 14 in the second half. Albany Pharmacy clawed back into the game and finally took their first lead, 53-52 with just under a minute in regulation. The Lady Bears hit two free throws to give St. Joseph’s back the lead and made a steal on the ensuing possession and sank two more free throws to build a three point advantage with five seconds left and the Panthers would be unable to get off a tying three-point attempt.

Ashley McQuillan was been selected as this year’s Tournament MVP leading St. Joseph’s to the HVWAC title with a 20 point performance in the championship game. The freshman point-guard from Brooklyn, NY shot 9-for-10 from the charity stripe, which included the Lady Bears last four points in the final minute of regulation and a crucial steal that proved to be the difference.

St. Joseph’s opened the game on a 12-1 run and never looked back in thewire-to-wire victory. Joannne Crimeni and Joanna Marciniec scoredeight points each to lead the balanced St. Joe’s attack that saw11 different Lady Bears record a field goal. Elizabeth Johnston, six-time Rookie of the Week, scored a game-high 13 points to lead the Blue Angels and Alianna Cordova pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

With the game tied 49-49 midway through the second-half, AlbanyPharmacy went on a 15-0 run breaking open a game that had 10 ties andfive lead changes. Kelly VanValkenburgh poured in a game-high 33 points, Amber Batzold added 16, Alex Oaks grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds (10 offensive) and Katie McCormack had 16 rebounds to lead the Panthers. ShirFuchs tallied 28 points and Lauren Kempin nearly had a triple-doubleamassing 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks to lead the Maccabees.

Ashley McQuillan has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Basketball Player of the Week for the third straight week. In a week where St. Joseph’s went 2-1, McQuillan posted a 26 point performance against Briarcliffe where she shot 10-for-15 (66.7%) and had six steals and four assists. She followed it up with a 27 point outburst on the road against Apprentice where she drained six three-pointers and shot 9-for-20 (45.0%).

Janine Doran has been selected as HVWAC Basketball Rookie of the Week. Against Briarcliffe, Doran fell one point shy of her first career double-double, amassing 11 rebounds and nine points. For the week, the freshman forward averaged 6.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 55 percent (6-for-11) from the floor.

Ashley McQuillan has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Basketball Player of the Week for the second straight week. The freshman guard led St. Joseph’s to two HVWAC victories on the week. McQuillan scored 25 points and swiped seven steals in a victory over Albany Pharmacy that clinched the regular season title for the Lady Bears. For the week, McQuillan averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 steals per game.

Elizabeth Johnston has been selected as HVWAC Basketball Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season. In the only game for New Rochelle, Johnston scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds against St. Joseph’s, playing all 40 minutes.

Ashley McQuillan has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Basketball Co-Player of the Week. McQuillan led St. Joseph’s to a 1-1 record averaging 24.0 points on 58 percent shooting from the floor (19-for-33) and 64 percent shooting (7-for-11) from behind the arc. The highlight of her week came in a win over Lancaster Bible where she scored a season-high 28 points on 12-for-16 shooting, including four three-pointers, dishing out four assists with no turnovers, all in only 24 minutes of work.

Amber Batzold has been selected as this week’s HVWAC Basketball Co-Player of the Week. Batzold had a breakout week leading Albany Pharmacy to a 1-1 record averaging 17.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 blocks. In a win over Hartwick College, the sophomore forward had game highs of 26 points (on 9-for-15 shooting) and 14 rebounds to go along with five assists.

Kelly VanValkenburgh has been selected as HVWAC Basketball Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The senior guard led Albany Pharmacy to a 2-0 record in conference play placing the Panthers atop the conference. During a home win over New Rochelle, VanValkenburgh scored a career-high 30 points, draining five three-pointers and pulling down nine rebounds. Against Yeshiva, she scored a team-high tying 16 points, while swiping six steals and blocking four shots.

Teresa Mangan has been selected as HVWAC Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second straight week. During a week where St. Joseph’s went 2-1 with key victories over York and Southern Maine CC, Mangan averaged 10.3 points per game and 3.0 rebounds, on 36 percent shooting (14-for-39) from the field.
